Hi there!

I'm from Canada, and I've been trying for a while now to figure out where, exactly, my grandma was buried in Romania - the cemetery and other related details. I never had the chance to meet her, but grew up hearing about the hard life she had in the countryside.

I've very, very recently got new information and was corrected on some of the facts.

Here's what I have:

She was born in Sarinasuf, Tulcea.
She passed away at some point in the 1990s - she was in her 60s.
She was not Jewish.
I believe she died in Constanța. Once upon a time, my mom had mentioned Corbu de Sus or Corbu de Jos to me, but this might not be exactly where she died.
Her name could show on the death certificate as VASILICA (or possibly VASILINA) MOCANU. Or, less likely: VASILICA/VASILINA MAZARE.
She had three kids in her lifetime.

I'm sorry for the vagueness!

Thank you so much for reading.

Hello!

Welcome to the community and thank you for sharing your story.

Unfortunately, finding a burial place in Romania is not always easy. It's possible that even if you know the cemetery, you won't be able to identify the grave.

Some hints might come from the death certificate. I assume you don't have it? Do you know who might have this certificate? possibly an aunt, uncle, or cousin? The certificate will mention the place where she died, and chances are she was buried in the same municipality. If it's a large city like Constanța, it won't tell you which specific cemetery, but at least it will narrow it down for you.

If the death certificate was lost, you can request a duplicate from the city hall, usually through the Romanian consulate in Canada.

Another way to figure out where she was buried would be to find an obituary in a newspaper (if one existed). I searched the online database of Arcanum and the only thing I found was a Vasilica Mocanu from Constanța who won Zepter products worth 1000 DM at a lottery in February 1996. If it's the same Vasilica, this just means she must have died after 1996, so it doesn't help much either way.

Hi! Thank you so much for your input.

I think, at this point, even just knowing the cemetery would be great. Sadly, no... not a single relative has this certificate. But thank you so much for mentioning the Romanian Consulate as an option -- hadn't crossed my mind to see what they can do. I truly appreciate that bit of info, and that you tried to take a look in the database. I will as well to see if my grandpa might pop up.

All the best!
