Hi.

I`m making maps and some time ago i realised that there are hardly to no maps of 2nd level administrative divisions of Danube principalities. I decided to choose 1774 specifically because of Moldova census and Bucovina still being a part of Moldova. I have run into a lack of sources problem (obviously because there are actually hardly any sources, for Wallachia). So i have a question, can i use census data of following years for administrative borders? If not, why, and if yes, which year/years specifically? And what can i use for Oltenia? Can i use austrian censuses? (if such censuses still exist. I havent researched this topic yet)

Thanks.

Hello!

Apologies for the late reply and being late welcoming you to the forum!

As far as I can tell, but I am no expert in historical geography: census data from subsequent censuses might not give you an accurate representation. I think there was a reorganisation of the administrative structure around 1832, with the Organic Regulation. So the census of 1838 has significant differences compared to the census of 1831. And there are definitely differences between the 1831 census and the divisions shown on a 1790 map.

This is actually the first map I know of, where the administrative divisions are shown:
Franz Anton Schraembl, 1790 / Generalkarten von Ungarn Siebenbürgen, Sclavonien &&

It is from 1790, so the closest source I know for your question.

And at least for the area I am studying, there are quite a few differences. For example, Telega was in Saac on the 1790 map, then appears in plasa Prahova, County Prahova in 1831. Similarly, Glodeanu was in Prahova in 1790, then moved to plasa Câmpului, County Buzău in 1831.

If it's not too late of an answer, I hope it helps, and curios to hear how you progressed in the meantime
