Titlu: Family of Augustus Teodorescu
Scris de: RPS din Mar 17, 2026, 12:34 AM
This time I am looking for information for Augustus Teodorescu.

He is an older brother of Mandita https://forum.genealogica.ro/index.php?topic=549.0 (https://forum.genealogica.ro/index.php?topic=549.0) and Eleanora https://forum.genealogica.ro/index.php?topic=540.0 (https://forum.genealogica.ro/index.php?topic=540.0)

The information I have about Augustus is limited and very vague.  I think he was born in about 1851, probably in Galati, to parents Georghe Teodorescu and Zoita Stanciu.

One family story stated that Augustus travelled to Germany to study and that he died quite young, possibly even in Germany.  I have assumed that it is unlikely that Augustus was married, but it is possible.

Is Augustus even a Romanian name?  Or is Augustus the Latin name?  Is it possible to find out when Augustus died?

I found a 1996 newspaper article for August and his brother Traian at https://adt.arcanum.com/en/view/RenastereaBanateana_1996_03/?query=%22august+teodorescu%22&pg=225&layout=s (https://adt.arcanum.com/en/view/RenastereaBanateana_1996_03/?query=%22august+teodorescu%22&pg=225&layout=s)

I knew that Traian had invented a submarine, but I was surprised to read that his brother August had helped with this invention.  The 1996 articles referred to August studying in Switzerland and Traian studying in Germany, but I think the brothers went to the opposite countries; ie August studied in Germany and Traian studied at the ETH in Zurich, Switzerland.

In this article it refers to the original newspaper articles written in 1881 and 1882.  I tried searching for the original articles but I was unable to find them.  Can someone please help me to find the original Romanian newspaper articles?

Petrus found August's academic record at ETH Zurich at https://viewer.hsa.ethz.ch/?manifest=https://vls.hsa.ethz.ch/client/files/manifests/5ca0/5ae7/9e68//FL35753444.json (https://viewer.hsa.ethz.ch/?manifest=https://vls.hsa.ethz.ch/client/files/manifests/5ca0/5ae7/9e68//FL35753444.json)

August left ETH Zurich due to his poor academic performance and went to the Technical University in Munich (TUM), where he continued his studies for four years between 1876 and 1880.

The ETH Zurich records had August's date and place of birth as 10 January 1854 in Galati.

I am still hoping to find out when and where August died.

Yes, "Augustus" can be a Romanian name. From what I can see in the naming trend ("Traian", "Augustus"; classical names, in this case of Roman emperors) their family likely belonged to the emerging Romanian bourgeoisie. These classical names signal a departure from more traditional, "rural" names like Gheorghe, Ioan, or Vasile, and reflect a desire to display cultural status.
And the fact that they attended universities in the West only further underscores this aspect.

I have just received this snippet of an article from Scoala Galateana:

August a studiat ingineria la Politehnica din München, în Bavaria, a fost scurtă vreme inginer la Căile Ferate Române; dar răcind la un bal s-a îmbolnăvit de piept, boa lěcasori.

Google translation to English:
August studied engineering at the Polytechnic of Munich, in Bavaria, and was briefly an engineer at the Romanian Railways; but catching a cold at a ball, he fell ill with a chest infection, which he later died of.

Sadly there were no dates relating to the above information.  I am hoping this information might be able to help find his death record.
